Ending Homelessness Begins With You!
While individual behavior change—like volunteering at a shelter or fundraising to house an unhoused family—is a start, collective and systemic changes are key to addressing the affordable housing and homelessness crises impacting the San Francisco Bay Area. One of the most powerful tools in the hands of people to strategically communicate the urgency of the affordable housing crisis, build alliances, and advance policy change, is advocacy.
From walk outs to voting guides, from creative social media posts to negotiation rooms, Bay Area residents—both housed and unhoused—are already tirelessly advocating for people and families experiencing homelessness. Housing justice advocates, grassroots activists, artists, journalists, and human service professionals are building communities ready to address the root causes of homelessness and housing insecurity.
However, despite this passion and commitment, many people and families may still be asking: “how can I advocate to end homelessness, particularly family homelessness, in the San Francisco Bay Area?” As our community continues to move mountains to fight for our present and future, it is critical that we create space and listen to the lived experiences of people and families experiencing homelessness, to advance our collective advocacy skills, and exchange ideas and experiences.
That is what #HomelessnessAwarenessMonth aims to do.
