Every family deserves a chance to succeed 🧡
Against my better judgment I forced myself to read the news last week, only to stumble upon an article in the New York Times which highlighted the fact that the states with the most restrictive abortion bans are also among the least supportive states for mothers and children in this country.
If you’ve been playing along at home, those two facts come as no surprise; they affirm what I’ve always known to be true: the folks who will suffer the most because of a weak social safety net will be low-income, Black and Brown, and women and children. Part of why I joined Hamilton Families as CEO was to advocate for and lift my voice alongside the voices of the single Black and Brown moms who are leading 3-in-4 families in our programs.
Suffice it to say, it’s painfully clear that your zip code, whatever your housing status may be, ultimately plays a significant role in your health, your well-being, your potential for a successful future in this country. While I’m heartened by the fact that we live in a state that will fight to maintain access to safe abortions and a suite of publicly funded supportive services for low-income families, I am keenly aware that this is a call to arms. We at Hamilton Families believe everyone should have an equitable opportunity to create the life they envision for themselves and their families. Those opportunities shouldn’t be denied because as a society we have failed to provide widely accessible social services and affordable homes to families who desperately need them.
In order for people to be and stay well both physically and mentally, for children to grow, and families to flourish, we need to ensure that all of us have housing we can count on. Our communities prosper most when we all prosper.
In community,
